While the exploitation of Mn oxides on the deep seabed faces policy and environmental challenges, this study focuses on onshore Mn-oxide mineralization in the East Pisco Basin. Manganese oxides are hosted in Neogene sandstone, siltstone, and tuff. The Mn oxides consist of cryptomelane/hollandite and todorokite. Chemical analyses reveal significant Co enrichment. Stratigraphic, mineralogical, and compositional evidence indicates a diagenetic origin associated with the decay of organic matter, Mn-Fe reduction, and subsequent oxygenated precipitation during the late Pliocene tectonic uplift of the basin. This research highlights the potential of onshore diagenetic manganese oxides as a viable source of Mn and Co.
