In 2019, the failure of the Feijao I tailings dam occurred, raising concerns about the safety of this type of facility. The mechanism responsible for this failure was flow liquefaction. This paper aims to study the susceptibility, triggering and effects of flow liquefaction of a tailings dam. The CPTu assay was used on a Bauxite tailings deposit that was extensively studied. The data obtained from the CPTu test allowed the evaluation of the state parameter, the safety factor against seismic triggering and the post-liquefaction shear strengths for applications in physical stability analysis. It was found that CPTu tests allow evaluating the stability of tailings dams against flow liquefaction in accordance with the most recent mine waste management guidelines.
