EL GIGANTE, A WORLD-CLASS OROGENIC DEPOSIT, GEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND AND EXPLORATION RESULTS

MARSA is part of the gold deposits located in the North-East metallogenic strip of Pataz Batholith, which is politically located in the province of Pataz, region of La Libertad.

The local geological framework corresponds to slate, schist and metavolcanic rocks of the Marañon Complex of Precambrian-Ordovician period; intrusive rocks of Pataz Batholith of 329 Ma-Carboniferous; sandstones, siltstones and conglomerates of Mitu Group and limestones of Crisnejas of Triassic-Jurassic period.

El Gigante presents a filonian mineralization of fracture-filling type associated to structures with a main NW-SE delineation with 20-45º NE dip veins and a subordinated system with split-type structures, cymoid and tensional loops of N-S to NE-SW direction with 45º-70º dip E-SE and a new veins system with N30º E direction with 40º NW dip. Mineralization happens in a 314 - 317 Ma range of age with several mineralization stages and a complex mineral pre-post tectonism; according to the IF study its Tºh ranges from 100 to 370ºC and salinities from 3 to 15wt% NaCl equivalent distributed in three groups of fluids.

In this paper we present the most relevant results of 2013-2014 exploration program, the discovery of a new veins system (N30° E / 40° NW) to NE edge of the Batholith in a contact with Marañon Complex, where a mineral resource and reserve of 242,000 oz Au has been estimated; and the announcement of the discovery of economic mineralization at depth to the East of Chilcas Fault between levels 2,470 and 1,800, all thanks to the studies and drilling campaign of the brownfield exploration program, this allowed us to estimate an indicated-inferred mineral resource of 1'160,000 oz Au.

These works have also made it possible to develop a model that integrates the structural geology, mineralogy, geochemistry and geochronology of El Gigante deposit, improving the understanding of the processes of orogenic deposits formation in this district.
